Retro Nostalgia (Series)

I consider shadows and highlights to be tools, much like a brush or palette knife. In this particular series I wanted to focus on those contrasting values a bit more than what I’ve done elsewhere. My color palette, along with the poses and compositions, is directly inspired by my love of comic books and anime. I consider the 80’s and 90’s as the golden age of anime. In shows like Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell and Akira, the play between those values is astonishing. There were always deep shadows and colorful highlights brought together by beautiful midtones. Those colors and tones helped to pull me into those imaginative worlds every Saturday morning as a kid.
